Real brass versus brass-colored
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc; it is heavy (about 8.5 grams per cubic centimeter, half again as dense as aluminum), non-magnetic, and it tarnishes to a brown-gold patina. Brass-colored knuckles are zinc or aluminum with a plated or painted finish: 4 to 7 ounces, magnetic if steel-cored, and the color wears at the edges. The product page material field is the tell.
Care
Leave the patina or polish it off with a brass polish and a cloth; either is correct. Keep it dry to slow tarnish. Do not lacquer it; lacquer chips and traps moisture.
